Questions & Answers

How well does this work to breakdown mixed breeds with no purebred relatives? Does it break down into actual breeds or just type? What percentage of DNA for a specific breed does a dog need for it to register?

Answer by ChewyApr 12, 2020
This DNA test kit is able to trace back 3 generations. Please click on the attached photo for a visual reference of test examples. To locate all current breeds that may be identified, please visit the manufacturer site at https://embarkvet.com/resources/dog-breeds/

Is this a one time fee or do you have to send payment also when you send the test in?

Answer by ChewyMar 18, 2020
Once you purchase the kit, simply swab the inside of your dog's mouth, activate your kit, and send the sample in a prepaid envelope to the company's lab.

I have a wolf hybrid that I believe is at least 50% wolf, will this test be able to tell me what else he has and how much wolf?

Answer by ChewyOct 25, 2021
This test can detect wolf ancestry as well as over 350 other dog breeds that may be present.

Can this test help with figuring out skin conditions your dog has?

Answer by ChewyDec 23, 2020
While Embark can detect over 190 genetic variants associated with increased disease risk, they cannot provide medical diagnoses. You should talk to your vet if you are worried about specific medical conditions in your dog.

Highly rated DNA test!

I bought the Embark Breed ID Dog DNA kit when it was on sale because quite honestly, it's an expensive investment. I was a little leery because we've all heard the stories that doggy DNA tests provide made-up results, but I still wanted to see for myself. Preparing the swab was a quick and easy process with straight forward instructions provided. The turn-around time was quicker than I expected, as well! When I adopted my girl, she was listed as a Bulldog by animal services, however a friend who is an expert in American Bullies told me she was likely an American Bully (possibly purebred), but she also very closely resembles the Olde English Bulldogge. Her results came back as 80% American Bully, 20% Bulldog! I would like to believe this is accurate. :)

Got my girl DNA tested because I was curious to know a bit more about her. Her results were so interesting and unexpected! I would have never thought of American Eskimo Dog being a possibility. I like that you can find relatives, too. I doubt I’ll find anyone super closely related to her but even her more distant relatives are cool to see.

I was hopeful and anxiously awaiting the results of my rescue's DNA to determine the breeds she favors. I found her results questionable. The breeds she favored mostly were the antithesis of how she looks, behaves and her anticipated size. I was speaking with a friend yesterday who just adopted a black lab and had her DNA tested as well. Her DNA came back as mostly Great Pyrenees. This really caused me to question the validity of the test. Her dog was pure black everywhere. Obviously a black lab which I know because I had one. I'm starting to think these tests are a scam.

Fun to find out

We knew our new rescue was a lab mix. We just didn’t know what he was mixed with. It was fun to find out and to get a back story on his mother. Results came in

I liked the speedy delivery, ease of taking sample, numerous communications to keep me updated with every step of the process. However I was disappointed with the results, 32% pit bull. He looked nothing like a pit bull, more like a Schnauser or some type of terrier. I have nothing against pit bulls, have owned them in the past. No one believes he has any pit bull within him.

Useful

Results took about a week and are very believable based on my dog's coloring and facial structure. Finally, I have an answer for when people ask what he is.

So Much Fun!

I purchased the Embark DNA kit for my friend's new dog, Twiggy. We've been going back and forth on what the results will be - dinner for the one that gets the closest!

I purchased the Embark DNA kit for my friend's new dog, Twiggy. We've been going back and forth on what the results will be - dinner for the one that gets the closest! The kit is super easy to use, the instructions are clear and easy, getting the sample was a breeze - a few swabs in Twiggy's mouth and done! This is the third test I've bought, and I just love getting to know my dogs on a different level. I also love all of the additional info that's provided with the results and that you get to track ancestors with close links to your own dogs DNA!

Used to find out what Jethro's father was. We know now.

My son's mostly German Shepherd had 11 puppies. We got several tested to see if his German Shepherd male that was very young when Lotus was in heat was the father

My son's mostly German Shepherd had 11 puppies. We got several tested to see if his German Shepherd male that was very young when Lotus was in heat was the father of any of them. The Father turned out to be almost 100% Australian Cattle Dog. Embark no longer has most of the features I really loved like, Dogs Like Mine, Compare option for any dog I find. Embark is not able to keep their chromosome data in phase. That makes the family tree they produce useless. Embarks relative finder is not nearly as good as Wisdom Panel's relative finder because they don't use any filters and dogs of the same breeds end up more closely related than actual relatives. Out of the 30 dogs they show as relatives, The first three of the thirty relatives shown are probably relatives. Their new feature that allows me to see the relatives of the relatives would be useful if they still had the old compare feature so I could see how they are related to my dogs. Embark does still provide the Haplotype in the report I downloaded but no longer available on web page. They no longer show other dogs with that haplotype. Embark does a good job of keeping me informed throughout the process. The website usefulness has gone down so I recommend Wisdom Panel to anyone who ask. I had two of the pups tested with Wisdom Panel,
