Cockatoo perches are important fixtures for these birds. Perches not only encourage exercise and play, but help birds maintain their nails as they climb and explore. There are several types of cockatoo perches:
Cockatoo perches are more than a resting spot. Give your bird a variety of perches made of different materials both inside their cage and around the house so they stay active and engaged.
The best types of cockatoo perches are wooden perches. Offer your bird different perches in varying diameters so they can exercise and stretch their feet. Rope perches made of natural fabric are also a good choice since they encourage climbing and play.
Your cockatoo needs a perch that's as long as their wingspan, and the diameter of their perch should be anywhere from 1.5 to 2 inches. Your bird's foot should be able to wrap 3/4 of the way around any perch.
The best materials for cockatoo perches are natural non-toxic wood. Some bird parents like to offer sand or concrete perches because it helps the cockatoo maintain their nails.
Rope perches are safe for cockatoos if made of materials such as jute or sisal rope. Cotton rope perches are not advised for cockatoos because they can cause crop impaction if ingested. All rope perches should be checked regularly for fraying or damage to prevent choking or injury from tangling.
